Week 2, Days 9-14 - SICK & Resting!

What a terrible time for this to happen. Right in the beginning of the program, when I need to be working out the hardest and building up my tolerance to this intense workout.

I did Core Synergistics on Monday. When I woke up Tuesday morning, I had a horrible head cold. My head was pounding, I couldn't breath or see straight. Excuses right? Yes. I will stand by them too. I started feeling better by Saturday but I think I got a 24-hour flu or some sort of stomach bug. Sunday I rested because I knew I would need my energy to start again on Monday with Core Synergistics again.

I do need to add, however, that on Wednesday, my father-in-law came over to the house to help me split my wood. He interrupted my game of Super Mario Brothers on the Wii! Anyway, I didn't know he was coming over and didn't want to split and stack wood when I was feeling sick. Well, he has been a Montana man for a long time so he had no sympathy for me. After I told him I had a horrible cold, he said, "Good, you can sweat it out by splitting wood!" I did this for about 4 hours on Wednesday and another 4 on Thursday until we had all the wood split and stacked. The moral to this addition is that I feel like by splitting and stacking wood I got in some working out to replace some that I missed. I was sweating, lifting, moving, throwing, etc... I was feeling much better after "sweating it out" too.

Tomorrow, Monday the 11th, starts week 3! Core Synergystics again. I'm really starting to like this one!

Week 2, Day 8 - Core Synergistics

Superman Banana!

Here we go again. The start of week two of twelve. I was actually a little excited this morning to start my work out. You know when you get that little feeling of excitement inside for some things? That's what I felt. It wasn't anything like Christmas or something similar to that but there was a small tinge of excitement. That is the attitude I need to have to continue this all the way through. We need to have excitement for most everything we do in life. I believe that is the way to truly enjoy the life God has given us. I have been depressed, recently actually, and I don't like being there. There is nothing there for me but sadness, loneliness and nothingness.

Working out has really helped bring me out of my depression. I think that I will only make a physical change by working out. It does much more than that. Only a week into working out and I feel so much better. Better about life, better husband, better father, better friend. I have more energy throughout the days.

Yesterday my throat started feeling itchy like I had a cold coming on. I'm fighting it like crazy because I do not want to get sick.

I will continue with the mental, physical and spiritual change as I go on this journey of completing the P90X program.

Thank you all who are supporting me!

Tomorrow - Cardio X

Day 7 - Stretching or Resting

I chose to rest today! You would too after the first week so don't judge.

Tomorrow: Week #2 - Core Synergistics again!

Day 6 - Kenpo X

Hiiyyyaaa!

I made it to the end of the week! The hard stuff is over until Monday. Tomorrow is stretching or resting. I think I will choose to stretch because I need it after a week of that. Kenpo is my favorite of all the P90X workouts. I don't know why, maybe because I'm learning karate at the same time as working out. Maybe because I sweat like crazy doing this one. Maybe because I don't have to lift any weights or do push-ups or pull-ups. I don't know, I just like it! I look forward to this one each week. Have I said how much I like this workout?

It does feel good to have finished the week of working out. I feel like I gave it my all for each workout and actually look forward to starting again on Monday.

I have to make the decision to continue this each day. I don't feel like I have to struggle to work out but I am still getting into the groove. Once I have momentum (which for me takes about 2 weeks), I will really be going and not much can stop me.

If I have encouraged anybody, after my thoughtful blogging, to give P90X a try, here is a link to purchase it on Amazon.com. You can get it new or used.

Day 4 - Yoga X / Day 5 - Legs & Back and Ab Ripper X

I'll tell you one thing, belly fat makes it very hard to do some of these yoga moves.

I am blogging about two days here because I wasn't able to get on yesterday.

Like everything in this program, this isn't just your run of the mill yoga work out. It seems like they just went to extreme and found all the hardest moves to put into this program. The other tough thing about it is it lasts 1 hour 30 minutes. I never realized (probably because I never did it before) that yoga can make me sweat so much. I was dripping sweat the first 20 minutes into it.

Once I was finished, it felt really good to have done it. I know it will be an integral part of the workout program, as Tony says.

Legs and back, followed by ab ripper x, was this morning. Have you ever done wall squats? Ouch.... Have you ever done one leg wall squats? Double ouch! This exercise worked hard on the legs and back. I suppose the only way to work your back muscles is to do pull-ups.

I suck at pull-ups. Most everything else I do, with exception to pull-ups and ab ripper, I feel like I do well. In this particular exercise, you do four types of pull-ups two times throughout. I used a chair (under one foot) and my max was seven. Yep, I admit it, I have no back muscles. Well, I'm sure after 90 days I will be able to do seven pull-ups without the chair!

Ab ripper X follows Shoulders & Arms and Legs & Back each week. I remember the first time I did ab ripper. I felt like I was going to die and I wanted to stop and give up during each move. I quickly realized I need to do as much as I can and the muscles will come. Last time, when I was at seven weeks, ab ripper was still hard but not as hard as in the beginning. My goal this time with ab ripper is to complete the 'mason twist' at the end. You're sitting up, legs lifted off the floor, hands grasped with fingers intertwined. You then begin to go side to side, touching the floor with your hands each time, for a total of 50 times. I can't even make it to 20 yet. I'll keep working at it.

Tomorrow, Kenpo X (I love this one!)

Day 3 - Arms & Shoulders

Today I worked my arms and shoulders. Primarily lifting weights.

The funny thing about this is that we only have 2 sets of dumbbells at home. One set is eight pounds, the other is 3 pounds. For most of the excercises I combined both for a grand total of 11 pounds! You gotta do what you gotta do. Do your best and forget the rest.

Tomorrow - Yoga X

Day 2 - Cardio X & Ab Ripper X

When I sit down to use the bathroom is when I realize how painfully sore I am. I think I use every sore muscle to sit. It also doesn't help that most toilets are much lower than other seats.

I must say, the second day is more difficult than it should be. It is because I am already so sore from the first day. I don't think P90X was created for just anybody. I suppose the X stands for eXtreme. The cardio workout is shorter than all the other ones, with an exception to ab ripper x. Today was purely "getting rid of the goo" and it felt good. The cardio x starts you out doing yoga, after warm up, which doesn't seem like it should go with cardio. It does get your heart pumping though. Thursday is yoga, I will talk more about how awesome that is then.

After Cardio X, I had to do Ab Ripper X. "It's not ab ripper 100 or 200, it's ab ripper 339!" Tony Horton says as he's introducing it. Another one of my favorites he says is, "I hate it, but I love it." I agree, I'm in the hating stage right now. If I counted, I'm sure I didn't even get to the 200 range of moves. I just want to get rid of this tire around my waist. I don't mind if I get a 4-6 pack in the mean time.

Today was great. I've gotten to day to many times. This is no time for celebration yet. Until I make it past week 7 (that's as far I as I have gone), I will not think about celebrating.

Tomorrow, Shoulders & Arms (so I can lift things and look good in a tank top!)

Day 1 - Core Synergistics

WOW! That one kills me each time. I will admit to you that I have started this program over about four or five times now. This felt like the first time again. This is certainly an intense workout that I was barely able to keep up with.

Each of these workouts last approximately an hour. After the times I had to pause it and rest, this morning was about 1 hour and 45 minutes! In fact, I'm even having trouble typing because I can hardly move my arms. This already happened to me this morning after this first workout.

I remember showering after most of the workouts. The hardest part was just lifting my arms for a few seconds to wash my hair. It felt like trying to lift 50 pounds.

I believe the first day is the hardest. Most of this is a mental decision to start. Once you have started, it still continues to be mental. I need to make the decision each day to continue this program. It does get easier though. Once I get into the momentum, it actually gets fun and easier. Tony Horton, the host, if you will, also makes it fun.

Tomorrow is Cardio X. Until then, I need to recover.

Time for a change

I have decided it is time to start again. Start what? Working out. Yep, I'm going after it again and this time I intend to finish. I have already asked my wife to be my accountability partner. However, in addition to that I'm going to blog each day, so I can have additional accountability. I may be the only one reading this but it is just one more way to be accountable for getting it done.

The vehicle I will be using again is P90X. Have you heard of it? It is an intense 90 day workout meant to get you fit in 90 days. I will go through a set program for 3 weeks, have a transition week, then start a new program for the next 3 weeks and so on and so forth. This is meant to keep you from plateauing and getting used to the work out. Check it out at:

I will keep a record each day after my workout. I officially started today, September 27th which means my last day will be Saturday, December 18th.

I will post pictures at the end to show you my progress visually. I will have a picture from today, one 30 days and another one on the 90th day!

I know it is more than luck so rather than say, wish me luck, I will say, wish me determination and the ability to follow through.

"Real Man" Work

This being my first blog, I thought I would talk about something interesting. I can't have that title and have something boring or YOU wouldn't come back for more. Who are "you"? The 1 person that came to read this. Thank you!

What is considered 'real man' work?

I would say cutting down a MASSIVE tree as tall as a 5 story building is something considered to be real man work. That is something I have taken part in recently here in my new home in Montana. I have to say, it is an amazing thing to watch a tree fall after cutting into it with our minuscule tools, like a chainsaw. If the tree could talk, it would say, "Look at that little man, or woman, (do I need to be PC in my blogs?) coming with that little nail file in their hand. What is this, what is happening......ahhhhh." And then it falls and I win. We then proceed to cut this massive tree into smaller pieces to take it home for burning.

Trees for firewood warm you twice; once when you cut them up and a second time when you burn them. What a great thing God has provided for us.

Disclaimer: The said trees were completely dead, burned in a fire started by lightning. We are helping thin the forest if another fire decides to burn through the forest again.

Until next time...enjoy the awesome central heating you may have. I think cutting down a tree is something everyone should get to experience at one point in their life.
